Update Thaumic Cast

The extension and the app are updated separately. Keep both up to date. An older app may still work, and the extension says so when the app is out of date.

From the Chrome Web Store, your browser updates the extension by itself. To check now, open the extension’s Settings, go to About, and select Check for updates. If a newer version is ready, select Restart the extension. While something is casting, it says “A newer version is ready. Restart once the casts end.”

A copy loaded by hand from the zip never updates itself. Check for updates opens the releases page instead: download the new zip, replace the old folder with the new one, and select the reload button on the extension’s card in chrome://extensions. Or move to the Chrome Web Store copy, which keeps itself up to date.

The desktop app does not update itself. In its Settings, under About, Check for updates opens the releases page in your browser, where the version number tells you whether there is anything newer.

The extension also tells you when the app is behind: The companion is out of date, with an Update desktop app button. It is a warning, not a stop: “It is on v0.12.0, and it may still work. If anything misbehaves, update it.”

To update, quit the app (Quit in its tray menu), then download and install the new version from the download page the way you installed the first, over the old one.

Run the new installer. Windows may warn about it again, as it did the first time: see Install the desktop app.

Run the installer again; it updates what is there and leaves your config and data alone. To see whether there is anything newer first:

Anything newer?
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/brew-lab/thaumic-cast/main/apps/server/install.sh | sudo bash -s -- --check

In Docker, get the new release in your clone (git pull, or check out its tag), build the image again, and recreate the container. See Run Thaumic Cast Server.
