Troubleshooting
Start from what you see. Most trouble is one of a handful of things, and the apps usually say which, in so many words. The pages below are titled the way the trouble looks, and quote the messages the apps show.
First things to try
Section titled “First things to try”- Check the desktop app (or Thaumic Cast Server) is running. In the extension, the top of the popup says Connected to the desktop app or Connected to the server when it is.
- Check the speakers play from the Sonos app. If they do not, nothing else will make them.
- Pause any VPN, then select Ask again in the desktop app’s Rooms.
By symptom
Section titled “By symptom”The app
Section titled “The app”- Not connected, or “Nothing answered. Thaumic Cast needs the desktop app or a server running to reach the speakers”: The extension cannot find the app
- Connection lost, casts stopped, or “The companion stopped answering…”: The connection was lost
- Your browser needs your permission, or Permission was refused: When you entered an address
- The app will not open, or Windows or macOS warns about it: Install the desktop app
- The companion is out of date: Update Thaumic Cast
The speakers
Section titled “The speakers”- “The network was asked for Sonos speakers and returned none”, or No speaker answered in a tour: No speakers found
- Rooms are listed, you press Cast, and nothing plays, or No speaker began playing: Speakers found, but no sound
- “The speakers were found, but nothing is getting back from them”: Speakers found, but no sound
- Not answering under a room: Only one room is silent
Casting
Section titled “Casting”- The cast did not start, Nothing here to cast, 10 casts already running and the like: A cast will not start
- A room started much quieter than it was: Volume and start level
The sound
Section titled “The sound”- It stutters or drops: Gaps in the sound, Pieces missing from the audio, or a room that cut out: Sound cuts out
- It arrives after the picture: Sound is late
- Cannot sync in the video sync row: Video sync
The “!” on the toolbar button
Section titled “The “!” on the toolbar button”When something needs a look while the popup is shut, the extension puts ! on its toolbar button. It is never a count. Hover over the button to read what it is about (“Thaumic Cast: Connection lost, casts stopped”, for example), or open the popup, where the notice waits beside the cast it belongs to.
It is set by a lost connection, speakers that cannot be reached or do not reply, a speaker that cut out or may soon, gaps in the sound, and a cast that ended on its own while you were elsewhere. The popup sums up the last of these in one line, beginning “While you were away”. Dismiss the notices, or fix what they describe, and the ! goes.
Still stuck?
Section titled “Still stuck?”Open an issue on GitHub. Say:
- what you did and what you saw, with the message word for word;
- the versions: the extension’s is in its Settings, under About; the desktop app’s is in its Settings,
under About; Thaumic Cast Server’s is what
thaumic-server --versionprints; - your computer’s system (Windows 11, macOS 15, Ubuntu 24.04…), your browser, and your speakers’ models;
- whether the speakers are on Wi-Fi or a cable, and on the same network as the computer.
A log helps more than anything. It holds the speakers’ addresses on your network, so look it over before you attach it.
