For Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, not in S mode. S mode installs apps only from the Microsoft Store; leaving it is free but one-way (Microsoft explains how).

On a Chromebook? The extension works here, but the app does not: it needs Windows, macOS or Linux. Run it on another computer on the same network as your speakers, or run Thaumic Cast Server on a Linux machine, then enter its address in the extension’s Settings.

Windows says “Windows protected your PC”. It shows this for apps it does not know yet, and an unsigned app like this one is one of them.

Check the app’s name first: it should be the file you just downloaded. “Unknown publisher” is the unsigned part.

When the app first runs, Windows may ask whether it can use the network. Allow private networks: your speakers fetch the audio from this computer, so they need to be let in.

Windows says Smart App Control blocked it? On Windows 11, Smart App Control blocks unsigned apps it does not recognise, and there is no way past it for one app. Recent versions of Windows let you switch it off and on again in Windows Security, but that covers every app. Until Thaumic Cast is signed, run the app on another computer on your network (a Mac, another PC, or Thaumic Cast Server on Linux) and enter its address in the extension’s Settings.
Windows in S mode? It installs only apps from the Microsoft Store, so this installer will not open. Switching out of S mode is free but one-way: Microsoft explains how.
Why the warning? Signing an app costs money every year, and this one is free. Signing is planned. Until then, check your copy against its checksum below.

Open the .dmg, then drag Thaumic Cast onto the Applications folder.

macOS says Thaumic Cast was “Not Opened”, because it cannot check an app that is not signed. Select Done, not Move to Trash. On macOS 13 and 14 the message is worded differently and the button says OK.

Scroll down to Security. Where it says Thaumic Cast was blocked, select Open Anyway. The button stays there for about an hour.

macOS asks once more: choose Open Anyway and enter your password. On macOS 15 and later it then asks whether Thaumic Cast may find devices on your local network. Allow it: that is how it finds your speakers.

Control-click and Open no longer works on macOS 15 and later. On every version, Open Anyway in Privacy & Security is the way through.
The extension
Where you press Cast. Works in Chrome, Edge, Brave and other browsers built on Chrome.
Install from the Chrome Web StoreFree, and it updates itself. In Edge, allow extensions from other stores when it asks. Rather load it by hand? The zip is under all files.

Open a tab that is playing something, click Thaumic Cast in your browser’s toolbar, choose rooms and press Cast. The first time, a short tour finds the app and your rooms. Get started
What you need
- A computer with Windows 10 or 11, macOS 13 or later, or Linux
- Chrome 125 or later, Edge, Brave or another browser built on Chrome
- Sonos speakers on the same network, with UPnP on in the Sonos app. It is on by default; how to check.
